We are now hiring Country Managers for our Investing in Women Program across the region.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Date: 25 January 2017

Title: Investing In Women – Country Manager

Location: Indonesia, Vietnam, or the Philippines (a total of 2-3 positions are available across these countries)

Contract type: Full-time, 2-year contract

Company Background

Unitus Impact is a venture capital firm that invests in scalable companies in India and Southeast Asia (e.g., Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines) that increase incomes and improve the livelihoods of the working poor. The ultimate aim is to achieve this impact while generating market-rate returns.

With a global team working out of San Francisco, Bangalore, Jakarta and Ho Chi Minh City, the firm has invested into a portfolio of 14 companies in sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, financial services, and employee benefits.

In 2017, the firm will deepen its engagement with gender lens investment tools and strategies with a view to more formally integrate them into its long-term investment strategy. To achieve this, several initiatives are planned, including an acceleration program for women-led companies, the creation of an investment vehicle to support the growth of companies led by or having a strong impact on women, and the development of a gender lens strategy for each of Unitus Impact’s key markets in Southeast Asia.

The Opportunity

The firm is seeking a passionate professional with proven analytical skills and creativity to join the team.

As the Country Manager for Investing In Women, you will work closely with Unitus Impact’s Investment Principals based in Southeast Asia to (a) identify and invest into companies that are (i) led by female founders / management or (ii) focused on improving the lives of women companies, and (b) formulate a long-term gender-lens investment strategy across the region.

You will be part of the core team that formulates and manages the firm’s deeper expansion into a nascent – but quickly growing – impact investment space and help the firm more fully develop a position of leadership in the region.

The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate the following traits:

  • Ability to Learn – Prior understanding of impact investment or gender lens investing is not a requirement, but eagerness to understand and discover new concepts is mandatory. As part of a pioneering team, you will be required to become a “student” of gender lens investment strategies and venture capital investing in the firm’s core geographies..
  • Analytical and Creative Thought – Someone who can generate ideas, find and collect market data, and generate analysis that helps make an informed decision. Creativity and ‘thinking outside the box’ should come as second nature as you will deal with problems and issues in a field that is considered very new in these markets
  • Strong Communication / Interpersonal Relationship Skills – An excellent communicator who balances listening with strong, persuasive, and clearly articulated points of view, (both in verbal and written form). Able to build and maintain relationships with entrepreneurs, other investors, business leaders, and other stakeholders within the ecosystem. Competency in a local language (e.g., Vietnamese, Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog) is a plus.
  • Action Oriented – A task oriented team member who is a self starter, stays calm under pressure, enjoys working in small teams, and proactively takes intiative to develop big ideas and lead projects. A candidate must driven by results and strongly believe in accountability.
  • Suitable Experience / Skillset – At least 3 years of experience in the field of management consulting or finance (e.g., investment banking, development finance, commercial banking, venture capital, private equity). Candidates must also have significant familiarity with the geography where they would be based.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Market Scoping – Map out the state of women’s entrepreneurship in each market, identifying the opportunities and the key barriers to having more female founders launch and scale companies.
  • Gender-lens Investment Strategy Formulation – Help develop strategies that will capture opportunities to invest in and support the growth and success of women SMEs, and while addressing existing barriers (on a country-by-country basis)
  • Pipeline Building – Explore creative deal sourcing strategies to generate a more robust pipeline of female entrepreneurs
  • Due Diligence – conduct in-depth analysis of potential investment opportunities and be involved in the investment process, making seed and growth-stage investments to prove the above investment strategy
  • Strengthen Partnerships – coordinate and partner with various groups in the firm’s network who can support women’s entrepreneurship. Identify and engage with influential women in each country while looking to expand opportunities for women entrepreneurs
